Interview with Poet & Author Chimdi Owhorji

EA: Creatively Creative returns with another international interview. Today, the author spotlight shines from Nigeria on poet/author Chimdi Owhorji.

EA: When did you start writing poetry?

CO: Well, I will not describe myself as an accidental poet. Sometime in 2013, Annice Morris, commented on my write up on Facebook. I replied to her comment. Then she asked me, “Are you a poet or a writer?” I told her, “I'm neither of them.” She then said, “Your writings are poetic.” I replied to her, “I'm only a man that loves to express himself in beautiful ways.” She sought my consent to add me to her Facebook poetry group, HIPS N LOOSE LIPS, I obliged, and joined my first Facebook group.
In HIPS N LOOSE LIPS, I read intriguing poems of prolific poets. I became intimidated by their oratory manipulation of words. My ink couldn't bleed, I only read and tried understanding how they got inspired to spill beautiful lines on paper. I always comment to compliment any poem that captivates my heart. My comment generates its own likes, and gets complimented too. Yet my pen was still nervous to bleed ink beneath its exterior confidence to comment on other poets pieces. I was encouraged to write by other poets, but self-doubt had a better part of me.
A day came when a picture was posted on the group's timeline, and every poet was challenged to write a poem according to your interpretation of the picture. I looked at the picture with serious eyes, and the picture spoke to me, "just write." My pen bled my first poem. And that was how poetry found me.

EA: What is the concept of Anchor of My Heart?

CO: Anchor Of My Heart is a collection of poetry collaborations between Tanya Deloatch and Chimdi Owhorji. The concept is to bring to life the awesome and reflective creativity within two beautiful souls that derives inspiration from different places, but intertwine and blend perfectly to weave a poetic flow, captured from deep within the ink wells of our collective souls.

EA: Does writing poetry come easy to you?

CO: When I was in secondary school, in as much as I love poetry, I wasn't good in writing it. It was always difficult to write a good poem whenever the literature teacher asked us to do so. However, when I joined Facebook and start reading poems of amazing poets, I got inspired to write my first poem. It actually came naturally to me, I was in love with my best friend, then in the university. I wrote that poem for her, and it really turned out great. Since then, I write on whatever comes to mind. Once my stubborn muse whispers to my soul, my bleeding ink spills beautiful lines on paper. Now, poetry comes to me like flame and I flow with the rhythm.

EA: Who are your biggest influences?

CO: Muhammad Ali is my biggest influence in life. As a little boy his bicycle was stolen and he vowed to beat up the person that stole his bicycle. His quest to find his bicycle landed him in the boxing gym. His dedication to the gym prepared him mentally and physically transformed him into the world heavyweight champion. He became the ''Greatest Of All Time.'' "The People's Champ'' as he was fondly called became a global influence, both in the ring of fighting and outside the ring. Ali was an outspoken civil rights advocate who embraced black pride and paid the iron prize. He was described as an arrogant black Muslim, and refused the draft into the U.S. army. He criticized the U.S. invasion of Vietnam and challenged the government of the day. He inspired same sentiment on other black people. After retiring from boxing, Ali channelled all his energy to preach  peace in the world. He was the only American who met with the dreaded Saddam Hussein, then Iraqi leader to negotiate for the release of American hostages, during the Gulf War of 1990. Ali was also honoured to serve as a United Nations Messenger of Peace. And in 2005, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He recognized his gift of strength as a blessing from God to touch humanity in positive ways, and he used his fame to change the world in five ways, through:

SPORTS
RELIGION
CIVIL RIGHTS
HUMANITARIAN
PARKINSON'S DISEASE ADVOCACY

No single individual has ever achieved such a feat before him and even after him.

I so much love his poetic response when he was asked, ''What would you like people to think about you when you are gone?''
“I'd Like for them to say.
He took a Few Cups of Love.
He Took One Tablespoon of Patience,
One Teaspoon of Generosity,
One Pint of Kindness;
He Took One Quart of Laughter,
One Pinch of Concern
And then he mixed Willingness
With Happiness.
He Added lots of Faith,
And He Stirred it up Well.
Then He Spread it over A span of
A Lifetime, And he Served it to
Each and Every Deserving
Person He Met.” - Muhammad Ali

“HIS UNIQUE ABILITY TO SUMMON EXTRAORDINARY STRENGTH AND COURAGE IN THE FACE OF ADVERSITY, TO NAVIGATE THE STORM AND NEVER LOSE HIS WAY. HE HAS SHOWN US THAT THROUGH UNDYING FAITH AND STEADFAST LOVE, EACH OF US CAN MAKE THIS WORLD A BETTER PLACE. HE IS, AND ALWAYS WILL BE THE CHAMP.”
— President Barack Obama

There is a bit of Ali in me. As a little boy who came from the village, to the city of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, at the age of 6. I neither spoke nor understood English. My determination to improve myself was later rewarded when I finally learned how to read and write at 14. Since then, I've broadened my horizons and perspective to life by acquiring knowledge - knowledge that'll arm me to deal with the world around me. I'm blessed with the wonderful combination of the gift to make ink bleed and the ability to share it. I use this wonderful gift to touch souls without touching, to inspire the mind to greatness and to seduce happiness to bow at our feet. The impact of my positive vibration stretches across the Atlantic, down to the centre of the world.

''I want people to think about me when I'm gone,
As a man who tried to love all,
As a man who spread joy and happiness like rumours,
As a man who tried to feed the poor,
Wherever my tear dropped a food tree grew there
And provided food for the hungry.''

EA: Aside from poetry, will you or do you write novels as well?

CO: I do write short stories, but I'm considering expanding my short stories into novels.

EA: What is your main aspiration as a poet?

CO: My main aspiration as a poet is to birth poetry with life, poetry with passion, poetry with purpose, poetry with global bridge, poetry with heart connection, poetry with romance, poetry with morality. My kind of poetry intends to create a common ground for like minds to discover our greatness and to comfort  bleeding hearts and lonely souls, while penning down our hearts and bleeding out our pain. My aim in the poetry industry is to create a strong force that binds us together, and use poetry to express societal awareness and offer solutions to societal ills. I want to see poetry create a strong brotherhood with positive impact to dissolve impossibilities. Poetry is the reflection of everything around us, and should explore the human world, relationships, morality and spirituality.

Also my biggest aspiration in life is to get my work out to a global audience through multiple outlets and the live stage. And I'm doing it right now.

EA: What advice would you give to aspiring poets?

CO: Don't struggle to write, just allow your pen to direct your ink to bleed. But most importantly, learn to enjoy the free flow of words.

EA: Finally, tell readers why Anchor of My Heart is a must buy.

CO: Anchor Of My Heart is a must buy, because it's an amazing collection of poetry collaboration between Tanya Deloatch and Chimdi Owhorji. It's a blend of our beautiful flaws. It appreciates our unique differences while enriching our experiences from past mistakes and cuddles the strength in our weaknesses. Our written voice emboldens our hearts vibration to connect our souls as one peaceful entity, to live a diamond dream life in the creation of our poetic minds. The romantic aura of our poetic pen is seductive and sensual, like the flow of physical and emotional connection between two lovers. It's a real intense love that could be imagined in movies. You not only desire to read our feelings, but you feel the passion that we both have for poetry come alive.

Epilogue

I would describe this conversation with Chimdi as poetic. This man truly has a gift with words. I would like to thank Chimdi for taking the time to speak with me. I also would like to thank Tanya Deloatch for referring him to EA: Creatively Creative. Individuals like him-- and many others-- are the reason why I created this platform.

Interview with Author Rocco Ryg

Tonight, EA: Creatively Creative speaks with political analyst and author Rocco Ryg.

EA: What is the concept of The Onryo Saga?

RR: The Onryo Saga is an anime-inspired superhero epic that asks the question: How would you change the world? The characters, both hero and villain, follow ideologies across the political spectrum that reflect their experiences and their concepts of right and wrong. They now have the power to remake society according to their values, ideas and principles, and have to compete in a battle of wits and skill that will determine whether the world turns to extremism or moderation, liberty or tyranny.

EA: What is your approach to engage readers?

RR: I invite the readers to ask themselves what characters and ideologies they best identify with. Are you an anti-government anarchist or a traditionalist? Do you believe a strong public sector is necessary for the advancement of a free state? Do you support the cause of social justice or a social hierarchy that benefits only the few? The readers are not dictated to, but allowed to decide for themselves what they agree with and what they oppose.

EA: Is writing a book easy?

RR: Not my books. Since I write about other countries and their political/cultural issues, I have to devote lots of time to research. This ensures that the story accurately portrays the culture, while also respecting it. Aside from that, lots of proofreading is necessary before the book is ready to publish. I proofread each one more than a dozen times. I also print them out and read them on paper, which provides a different perspective than a computer screen. It could take two, three or more years to perfect it.

EA: Who would you say are your biggest influences?

RR: I was inspired by various anime series, especially the ones with a lot of soul and depth to their storylines. The work of comics legends like Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman and Ed Brubaker were also an inspiration.

EA: I understand that you also have an interest in politics. What exactly sparked that interest?

RR: I came of age in the Bush era, and all the lies and deceits of that time led me to question what I had been taught. I became fascinated with political theory and earned my Masters degree in the subject. I like to read about different theories and the results of their practice, and I apply my studies to my stories.

EA: Are there any upcoming projects?

RR: I am currently researching material for my fourth entry in the Onryo Saga, The Tree of Zaqqum. In it, my heroes head to Israel to stop Palestinian extremists from destabilizing the country with quantum technology. But things are not as they seem, and the escalating conflict will cause them to question everything they believe. I think it will be my most intriguing book yet!

EA: What advice would you give to aspiring authors?

RR: To really make your book stand out, take a concept everyone is familiar with and turn it on its head. Put your own unique twist on an idea that shows your readers who you are and what you believe. Expand your readers' minds and make them say, "Wow, I've never thought of that before."

EA: Finally, tell the readers why The Onryo Saga is a must buy.

RR: In this series, I wanted to present comic book action and anime-inspired creativity, combined with a rich story that educates and inspires the readers about the world's issues and political theories. After writing three entries, I've pushed myself to open my mind to other systems of thought and different possibilities, and I hope my readers will open their minds too and embrace a broader perspective. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!

Epilogue

Another fellow author speaking on the process of writing books. Albeit enjoyable, the process is not as simple as those outside of the literary realm thinks. Particularly if you're dedicated to your craft, and you want to create something that's not only interesting and compelling, but also practical, and lot of this stems from extensive research.

I agree with the concept of taking content and presenting it in our own unique way that broaden the horizons of the readers. Make them (perhaps) view something from a perspective they never considered. I would like to thank Rocco for speaking with me. For more on Rocco, and his books, visit his Amazon Page.

8,000 Views Edition: Interview with Author Imani

Before I begin, I want to announce that EA: Creatively Creative recently reached over 8,000 blog views! Today, I sit down with an individual who's artistic in more ways than one, author and graphic designer, Imani.

EA: Has writing always been a passion of yours?

IM: Yes. From the moment I started writing at the age of 12.

EA: Who are your biggest influences?

IM: Zane, Carl Weber, Ann Clayton, James Patterson, and the screen writer, Shonda Rhimes.

EA: What is the concept of A Lethal Vendetta?

IM: I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and write an African American mystery and I wanted to write a book based off the bible scripture: "the sins of a father are visited upon the son"  (Numbers 14:18), except I wanted to make it about a mother..

EA: Is it a standalone, or will it be a series?

IM: This is a standalone, but I'm working on a series based off of two characters in this book so I guess it's like a spin-off to an upcoming series if that makes any sense.

EA: Would you say writing a novel is easy?

IM: It is not. It is hard work and takes time, patience, confidence and determination.

EA: What can readers expect next from Imani?

IM: Books written in other genres as well as urban fiction and mystery and suspense. They can expect more chilling reads with twisted plots and unexpected outcomes.

EA: What's your advice for aspiring authors?

IM: Don't let discouragement and negativity get to you. Giving up is not an option. Disappointments are inevitable, but keep pushing through and don't let anyone, not even yourself stand in your way.

EA: Finally, tell the readers why A Lethal Vendetta is a must buy.

IM: It is "a keep you on the edge of your seat", page-turning mystery read that's full of drama, mystery/suspense and a little bit of erotica. It will keep you reading way into the wee hours of the night and you're not going to be able to put it down.

Epilogue

When partaking in anything, it's imperative to be persistent. It won't always be smooth sailing, you will encounter internal and external opposition, but if it's what you truly desire to do, staying the course is crucial. I would like to thank Imani for speaking with me today. For more on Imani, and her novels, or to follow her on social media, you can do so by visiting the hyperlinks below.

Interview with Author Bronte Huskinson

EA: Creatively Creative is back with a third consecutive interview, this time going international. This afternoon, I spoke with a unique individual who has ventured in the world of modeling, has a photo collection of books, and is a contributing writer for the Huffington Post. From the UK, this is author Bronte Huskinson.

EA: When did you discover your passion for writing?

BH: I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember, starting with short stories and poems. I first started getting serious about writing probably when I was around 10 years old when I started writing two never ending novels. One was about a kidnapping and the other about a girl who turned immortal. I often wish I still had these just so I could look back and see how far I’ve come.

EA: What is the concept of and motivation behind Never Mind My Thigh Gap?

BH: Never Mind My Thigh Gap is a novel based off my own experiences with body issues. When I was fifteen years old I really struggled with how thin I was. I was told that I was ‘too skinny’ and was even told that I looked anorexic. This really knocked my self-confidence, so to feel proud of my body I decided to do the one thing that scared me most: enter a modelling competition. Never Mind My Thigh Gap follows Alice in the lead up to walking down the runway in four inch heels and a bikini and her struggle to feel proud of who she is.

EA: Who are some of your biggest influences?

BH: Maggie Stiefvater has always been a huge influence of mine. Her Shiver trilogy was what started my love for reading. But more recently, I have really loved Laura Ruby’s work and admire Erin Bowman’s ability to create a really unique character voice.

EA: Would you say that writing a book is easy?

BH: No. Anyone who tells you writing a book is easy isn’t doing it right. It’s hard work! It’s countless hours planning out the perfect story, changing the plot halfway through writing it because your character demands you to. It’s having several mental breakdowns because you think your work is terrible and forcing yourself to write even when you’re exhausted. And don’t even get me started on editing the thing! There’s many times when I’ve considered giving up, but it is all worth it in the end.

EA: What started your desire to photograph books?

BH: I first started delving into the Bookstagram world around a year ago when I discovered several accounts with a huge following, but it wasn’t until February of this year where I started thinking “you know what, I could do that.” I never in a million years thought I would become a book photographer  on my Instagram account (https://www.instagram.com/bookishbronte) and never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would get paid to do it for publishing companies!

EA: What are the future endeavors for Bronte Huskinson?

BH: I am still writing with plans to release two novels in the near future. Ever since publishing Never Mind My Thigh Gap I have been working on my writing throughout my Creative Writing degree and can already see how much my work has improved. I’m really excited for my final year of university and can’t wait to release my novels into the world.

EA: What advice would you give to aspiring authors?

BH: Keep. Going. Never stop writing even when you feel like giving up. Writing a novel is the toughest thing you will ever do, but I promise it will all be worth it in the end.

EA: Finally, tell the readers why Never Mind My Thigh Gap is a must buy.

BH: I’ll be completely honest and tell you this book is not for everyone. It was written with a certain audience in mind. It was written for young girls who are not necessarily body confident and to help them (hopefully) find a way to love themselves. I want this book to be a ‘friend’ to girls like me, who need someone to tell them they are not alone and there is a way to love your body.

A common ground that I've found with fellow authors since doing interviews with them is that quite a few have commented about the grind of the editing process, and it can be more taxing more you're doing your own editing, but as Bronte stated, in the end, it's all worth it.

Epilogue

I thought that was a very admirable way of Bronte to conquer her lack of self-esteem and build confidence by entering a modeling competition overcoming her naysayers (internal and external) in the process. I can understand the notion of the novel not being for everybody-- although some just enjoy a good read, regardless of the genre-- and targeting a specific audience. I tend to have an aggressive approach to my work, and I know it doesn't suit everyone, and that's fine with me.

I definitely want to thank Bronte for speaking with me. I believe this conversation will be encouraging for those going through the same struggle. I, myself was teased a lot growing up for my slim stature. For more on Bronte, you can visit her website at www.brontehuskinson.com.

Interview with Author & Publisher Chyna L.

What a coincidence! Yesterday, I spoke with Tasha Marie; today, I sit down with author and Founder of Ambitious Ink Presents, Chyna L., who is the publisher of Tasha.

EA: What was your journey like before becoming an author?

CL: The good thing about this question is that anyone who has read my first series, already knows exactly what my journey has been like. A lot of ups and downs. A lot of hard lessons learned and a lot of struggling within myself. I can't say that I had a rough life, but what I can say is that I went through a whole lot of stuff in a very short amount of time. From teen pregnancy to reconnecting with God, my journey so far has covered almost every spectrum of any young woman's life.

EA: Who are some of your biggest influences?

CL: My mother is my every day inspiration. She's been through more than a simple three book series could ever cover, yet she's still standing strong. She and I have been through a lot over the years; some good, some bad. But once I was really able to take a step back and see just how much she's done for me as a single mother, our bond became unbreakable. That's my bestie right there.

EA: What is the concept of the Risking It All For My Hustla series?

CL: The concept is simple. Elevate. Progress. Know better, do better. In any and every situation. Through any and every struggle. The main character in that story, which most people don't know happens to be myself, goes through so many hardships but in the end she becomes a better person. This is all that really matters at the end of the day. Just be a better person you while you can.

EA: Is writing a novel easy?

CL: Writing this particular series was easy in some aspects because all I was doing was recalling events and putting my own little twist on them here and there. In other aspects it was hard for that same exact reason. Opening up and revealing all of your inner most secrets to the world is no easy task, but I definitely don't regret doing it.

EA: You're also the founder of the publishing company, Ambitious Ink Presents. How were you able to get that started? What are the requirements for being an author with Ambitious Ink?

CL: To be honest, after I published the very first book in the Risking It All Series, I immediately started thinking about starting my own publishing company. For me, personally, it's bigger than just writing. Yes, writing is my passion, but I am also passionate about growing. That being said, as I was writing the other two books in the series, I begin to research and teach myself what I felt that I needed to know to do this thing on my own. Four months after my first book released, I received my business license for "Ambitious Ink Presents". A month after that I signed my very first author, Tasha Marie and a month after that we dropped her very first book Small City Big Dreams. From there, it's only been up.

As far as being an author with Ambitious Ink there are no exact requirements. I take submissions for all genres and I give all submissions my undivided attention. But what I look for the most is creativity and the ability to step outside of the box and set yourself apart from the rest. Oh and of course you have to have ambition!

EA: Would you tell us more about your endeavors in the fashion and music industry?

CL: To be honest, I don't really dibble and dabble in the fashion world as much as I use to. Now I just consider myself extremely fashionable where as in my younger days, when I use to do runway shows, I considered myself to be somewhat of a fashionista. I am way over those days now. But thanks to my sister in Christ and best friend Kyana also known as Kiki Banks, I am very in tuned with the music industry. I can't even begin to explain how dope of an artist she is so it's only right that I support her one thousands percent. Video shoots, shows, studio sessions, interviews, you can find me right there holding her down. Love you Ki!

EA: What advice would you give to aspiring authors?

CL: Just be yourself and don't try to follow the trends. Focus on writing from your heart and not so much on writing what you think is going to sell. I respect individuality over sales all day.

EA: Finally, tell the readers why the Risking It All For My Hustla series is a must buy.

CL: Because its real, and I mean this literally and figuratively. I put my heart and my soul into this series. I exposed things about my world I didn't even want to remember existed. I feel like this series can and has set a lot of people free from their own inner demons, because we all do have them. But once you read the series and you see where I've been in comparison to where I am, you'll be able to see firsthand just how God works when you let him. Oh and then you can read the spin off story Ambitions of a Savage that just released two weeks ago and is available on Kindle right now.

Epilogue

Going back to Chyna's advice, I couldn't have put it any better myself. Although I believe in being resourceful, in other words, taking something you find applicable from others and adding it to own approach, overall, have or develop your own style. Blaze your own trail. Don't merely emulate someone else, or just follow whatever the trend is.

It's not easy opening up and revealing things you would rather keep hidden, whether it's from shame, fear, or a combination of both. It takes more strength than one thinks. I definitely want to thank Chyna for speaking with me. For more on Chyna, you can follow her on social media by visiting the hyperlinks below. If you're interested in becoming an author for Ambitious Ink, you can email her at ambitiousinkpresents@gmail.com.

Interview with Author Tasha Marie

EA: Creatively Creative is back to speak with another young, literary mind. Today, the spotlight shines on authoress Tasha Marie.

EA: Would you tell us a little about the road you traveled to get to where you are today?

TM: Well, for starters, it’s been a long road traveled. Lol. I’m 28 with a 3 year old daughter who is my strength and motivation every single day. A year ago if someone would have told me I’d have books on Amazon and in bookstores, I would have laughed in their face. I was homeless last year for several months and it was hard. There were days I wanted to give up but if I did that I wouldn’t be here now. I kept working hard and I prayed for better days. Look at God…I’m forever grateful.

EA: When did you realize that writing was a career you wanted to pursue?

TM: I’ve always loved writing. I remember my eighth grade English teacher used to love my essays, but would always say I’m “cheap with my words.” LOL… I would always write just enough but never too much. Slowly I started writing short poems and stories, and I even tried writing my first novel at the age of 13, but lost all the files when my desktop crashed. I gave up for a while and started reading instead. The more I read the work of other amazing authors I thought to myself, “Tasha, YOU can do this…” so I did.

EA: Are there any authors who inspired you to become a writer?

TM: Many authors have inspired me to become a writer; Omar Tyree with Flyy Girl, Keisha Ervin with Me and My Boyfriend, Wahida Clark with the Thug series, and many more. I love reading but especially I love reading urban fiction because it’s the most relatable. I would have to say my publisher, Chyna L., also inspired me to pursue writing seriously. I saw the moves she was making in the industry, reached out to her on a personal level, and the rest is history. She told me not to give up and keep pushing because I have true talent! Thank you Chyna!

EA: What is the concept of the Dreams series?

TM: Small City, Big Dreams (part 1) portrays how small the city of Boston is; everyone knows everyone, and everyone’s dealing with everyone. There’s drama, sadness, happiness, and death. It shows how some people in the inner city dream of a bigger and better life besides just staying in the hood. Loyal To My Dreams (the sequel) shows the steps people are taking to make their dreams comes true and overcoming obstacles to get to the top. Of course there’s drama, joy, disappointment and struggles along the way as well.

EA: Would you say that writing a novel is easy?

TM: For me, the first book was easier to write than the second because I didn’t outline anything for Small City, BIG Dreams. It might sound weird but everything was freehand, whereas for Loyal To My Dreams I outlined and mapped out what and where the drama and such would take place. It was challenging to create the scenarios and drama the second time around but I’m always up for a challenge and the readers LOVE this book! So in the end everything worked itself out.

EA: Are there any upcoming projects?

TM: Yes! I’m currently working on the spin-off to the Dreams series which features one couple from the series and some new characters. Also, I plan on turning the Dreams series into a web series or movie (fingers crossed) one day. I dream about it constantly so I’m going to speak it into existence!

EA: What's your advice for aspiring authors?

TM: You can do anything you put your mind to. If you want it bad enough, you’ll obtain it. Don’t feel discouraged; there will be moments where you feel your hard work isn’t paying off because trust me, I feel that way at times, but always believe in yourself and your vision. Anything is possible!

EA: Finally, tell the readers why the Dreams series is a must buy.

TM: Small City, BIG Dreams and Loyal To My Dreams are must buys without a doubt! If you’re looking for a fast yet good read that’s relatable to everyday life situations/relationships, then grab your copies today! Both are available via Amazon. Enjoy. J

Epilogue

On a side note, I've never been to Boston, but I had no idea it was considered to be a small town. From what Tasha described, it reminds me a lot of when I was in Lake Charles, LA., except Lake Charles is less popular in comparison because Boston is mentioned and featured a lot in the media.

Tasha's story is one of trails, perseverance, and triumph It is not only inspirational, but a motivational source for those who are or may be in a similar situation, or worse. I would like to thank Tasha for taking the time to speak with me today. For more on Tasha and her novels, visit her social media links below.

Interview with Best-Selling Author & Publisher J. Brinkley

EA: Creatively Creative returns to kick off the month of September with author and CEO of VOMA (Voices Of My Ancestors) Publications, J. Brinkley.

EA: When did you discover that writing would be a path you would choose as a career?

JB: In 2014 or 2015, when I put my first book out.

EA: Were there any authors who inspired you to become a writer?

JB: Donald Goins, Iceberg Slim, James Patterson, and John Grisham.

EA: What is the concept of I Forgot to be Your Lover?

JB: Choices. We need to be conscious of our daily choices.

EA: Would you say that writing a novel is easy?

JB: Yes and No. You will get better as you continue to write. I say no because you have to make time to write. It takes a lot of discipline and thought.

EA: Describe the feeling of being a best-selling author.

JB: Honestly, I don't see it any different from putting out a regular book. Being a bestselling author only mean you sold a certain amount of books within a certain time frame. Either way, the accomplishment of getting a project completed is still the same to me.

EA: Was it a difficult process to launch your own publishing company?

JB: Launching my own publishing company was easy.

EA: What are the requirements for becoming an author with VOMA?

JB: Just be sincere in your craft. We accept Urban Fiction, Romance, Erotica, Crime and Suspense stories, etc.

EA: What's next for J. Brinkley?

JB: I have a new book I just completed Ghetto Tales Of Anguish. And of course I'm back at the drawing board for another book.

EA: What advice would you give to aspiring authors?

JB: Do your research before signing with a publisher and/or before you self publish. Be true to yourself. Be creative.

EA: Finally, tell the readers why I Forgot to be Your Lover is a must buy.

JB: Well, it's a realistic story. People can learn a lot from it. It's a page turner. Simply put.

Epilogue

It is important to do your research before deciding to self-publish, and/or sign with a publication company. Publication companies and self-publishing both have their advantages and disadvantages. I'll hyperlink a guide for those who are looking to publish with a company, and the warning signs to watch out for.

It is equally important to be true to yourself and (definitely) creative as an author. It can be tempting to try to follow another author's approach, but I would advise against it. There's nothing wrong with taking something from them you find applicable and adding it to your own approach, but overall, have your own style, create your own legacy.

I would like to thank J. Brinkley for speaking with me today. For more on J. Brinkley, and if you're interested in becoming an author for VOMA, visit his website at vomapublications.com.

Interview with Poet/Author A.M. Torres

Today, EA: Creatively Creative's author spotlight returns, speaking with poet and author, A.M. Torres.

EA: Turmoil is a very interesting name for a book. What’s the concept and what motivated you to write it?

AMT: Poetry is the concept for Turmoil. I was motivated to release my second poetry book, but there was a lot I needed to express in this one book. Turmoil is the perfect name to describe the hell, and suffering I’ve endured for the last couple of years. It captures the challenges of suffering with severe depression, raising an autistic child, and losing my father to Alzheimer’s disease only last year. I was hospitalized for depression, endured an arrest, and coped with the sudden death of my therapist also last year. Much of this heartbreak allowed me to write some of the poems I included in this collection. I hope to give a voice for the many who have experienced such things, but I also need to point out that the book is not only these issues. It’s a book about survival, and being able to cope.

EA: Were there any authors or poets who inspired you growing up?

AMT: As a child I loved Carolyn Haywood, and Beverly Quimby. Their books on Betsy and Ramona were early inspirations.  At fourteen I first read S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders and that book inspired me even more. I knew I wanted to write novels; I explored writing poetry. When I read V.C. Andrews' Flowers in the Attic I struggled to put it down. Every chapter had suspense, and truthfully those are my favorite kind of stories. I wanted to write stories like that and attempted to with my first novel Love Child which was released in 2011. As far as poets go I enjoyed reading Edgar Allan Poe, and Robert Frost who I discovered in The Outsiders with his poem Nothing Gold Can Stay I have also been inspired by Sylvia Plath, and Charles Bukowski.

EA: Would you say that the process of writing a book is easy?

AMT: Not at all. While I love getting lost in my character’s world or in my words of poetry, writing a book is time consuming. There is so much work involved not to mention the editing that can be difficult. There is also the formatting, and making sure the story or poem flows nicely. This not only takes time, it can be frustrating. It’s always challenging to write a story that holds a reader’s attention.

EA: Which is more challenging to write? Novels or poetry?

AMT: I have found novels to be a little more challenging. There is so much one needs to keep track of when writing a novel. The plot, the characters, events.  Staying consistent is important when writing a novel while in poetry consistency is important, but I can explore more freely than I have with novel writing.  The editing of poetry can be fun when my mood calls for it. Anything can be used in poetry, while in novels you must stick with the story.

EA: Do you have any upcoming projects?

AMT: Yes. I am currently working on Child Game the fourth book of my Child Series. I’m aiming for an October release or sometime towards the end of the year. I am also working on my annual Christmas poetry book “J and K Christmas” which will be the 2017 edition. I have released an edition every Christmas since 2012. I have written more poems I am holding for the future. With Turmoil still being a recent release, I want to spend more time to promoting that book before releasing the next one.

EA: What is your vision as a writer, and poet overall?

AMT: I hope to become established as both. More than anything I hope I can write stories, and poems people can enjoy reading, and relate to.

EA: What’s your advice for aspiring authors/poets?

AMT: Don’t be afraid to write your story or poem regardless of topic or subject. While it’s true that not all writings will please everyone, it is also true that there’s an audience for different types of writing. Tell your story, express your poem. All writers deserve to be heard.

EA: Finally tell the readers why Turmoil is a must buy.

AMT: There are poems in Turmoil that different readers can relate too. Aside from the turmoil and depression, the book also offers themes readers can take refuge in. If you have faced loss, have been in the dark, enjoyed the night, doubted yourself, felt nostalgic, reflected in the rain, or have a piece of your childhood taken away then Turmoil is for you. It has poems one can learn from, and will help one not feel so alone with life’s daily and difficult challenges.

Epilogue

It takes a lot of courage to openly talk about the perils one faces in daily life, especially when it's traumatic experiences, or it's seemingly one thing going wrong after another. Writing a book-- although I enjoy the process-- is very time consuming, and one of its biggest challenges is making sure the story flows nicely and makes sense.

Interview with Poet/Author Tanya Deloatch

Today, EA: Creatively Creative spoke with poet and author Tanya Deloatch, who recently released her latest book, What's Love Anyways? Lexi's Poetic Journal.

EA: First, congratulations on your release today. When did you realize that writing was something you wanted to do?

TD: Thank you SO much!  Each new release day is a wonderful feeling.  Today was Book Release #6 for me, I am so grateful and humbled by each accomplishment. I had an awesome English teacher in high school.  After a few assignments in her class, I was smitten with writing. I found it to be very therapeutic, it still is today.

EA: Who are your biggest influences to becoming a writer?

TD: I am an avid reader. My favorites include the works of Dr. Maya Angelou, Terry McMillan, Alice Walker, W. E. B. Du Bois.

EA: What is the concept of What's Love Anyways? Lexi's Poetic Journal?

TD: Lexi is the main character in my first novel; this project is her diary of sorts as she goes through a roller coaster of emotions. She is torn between her first love and the Mr. Right who made her believe in love again.

EA: In your opinion, is the process of writing a novel easy?

TD: Absolutely not, you not only have the task of capturing your reader and entertaining them; but also making sure that the story in your head relays on paper.

EA: Which would you consider more challenging? Writing a novel or poetry?

TD: For me, writing a novel.  It’s fun, exciting and definitely challenging.

EA: What can readers expect next from Tanya Deloatch?

TD: The novel featuring Lexi’s story. Love Takes Time – Lexi’s Heart, as well as another book of poetry with my collaboration partner.

EA: What advice would you give to aspiring poets/authors?

TD: Write from your heart, do not try to be or mirror someone else. Don’t get discouraged, keep writing!

EA: Finally, tell the readers why What's Love Anyways? Lexi's Poetic Journal is a must buy.

TD: The revelations the main character Lexi goes through in her poetic diary will have you wondering if she really knows what love is. I believe my writing style has improved and expanded with this book, and will lead readers to check out my first novel Love Takes Time - Lexi's Heart. This book is an insightful, yet realistic view into love, relationships, heartbreak, and hope.

Epilogue

Most authors, including myself, share the same sentiment of writing being therapeutic. I'm a big proponent of writing from the heart, creating and sticking with your own approach, not trying to emulate someone else, or allowing someone's criticism to deter you. I thank Tanya for speaking with me today. For more on Tanya, and her novels, visit her Amazon page in the link below.

Interview with Author Rosa Roberts

Rosa (center) at St. Pius private school

EA: Creatively Creative has the honor once again of speaking with one who has served in the military. She's also the first author that I've interviewed who writes children's books. Tonight, the author spotlight shines on motivational speaker, writer, and Army veteran Rosa "CoCo" Roberts.

EA: What is the concept of Monny's Trip Around the World?

RR: Without giving away the story, Monny's Trip Around the World is teaching children to use their imagination.

EA: What inspired you to write children's books?

RR: I love children. Each children's book that I write, is intended to teach a child something.

EA: Who would you say are your biggest influence(s) to becoming a writer?

RR: My biggest influence, I would say is myself. I've always enjoyed writing. I remember making homemade cards for my mother on Mothers Day, as well as just because cards with poems inside. I "aspire to inspire," others.

EA: Would you say that the process of writing a book is easy?

RR: When I first began writing, I would say, not at all. Coming up with a story line and Writer's block is the hardest part.

EA: Which is more challenging for you? Writing a novel or children's books?

RR:  Definitely writing a novel. Coming up with and keeping the story line is the hardest. However, once I get going, it's kind of a breeze from there.

EA: Would you share with us your overall experience of being an Army veteran?

RR: My overall experience as a Veteran. Hmmmn, I absolutely loved my job when I was in the military, when I got out of the military things weren't as easy as one may think. Without sounding "political," we've all heard the stories about Veterans not getting the help that they need. In some instances that is true, that's all I will say on that.

EA: What's next for Rosa Roberts?

RR: Next up for me is a book for the adults, entitled What Lies Beneath, prayerfully lots more speaking engagements (inspiring adults and children) and TV.

EA: What is your biggest aspiration as a writer?

RR: My biggest aspiration would be that people (children and adults) see something in me that they can see in themselves. That they understand that no matter where you're from or how old you are, you can follow your dreams and have what you say.

EA: What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

RR: Stick it out. No matter what it looks like, no matter what others have to say, stick with it. If writing is your passion, do it! When life throws you curve balls, don't give up; there is purpose in your pain.

EA: Finally, tell the readers why Monny's Trip Around the World is a must buy.

RR: Monny's Trip Around the World is a must buy, because it is a cute story, that allows children to use their imagination! It teaches them "something," so ask questions as you read to them or as they read the book.

Epilogue

For me, coming up with story lines, for the most part, is easy. I can relate to the writer's block. That's one of the biggest challenges for most writers. I agree with staying the course and going the distance with whatever it is you set out to do. Be more determined and relentless than your opposition, whether it's internal or external.

I definitely want to thank Rosa for speaking with me. For more on Rosa, and her books, visit her website at www.cocorobertsbooks.com.

Interview with Author Cherilyn Hearn

Recently, the EA: Creatively Creative blog reached over 6,000 views! I can't thank all of the authors who allowed me to interview them enough for helping make this possible-- and more to come. Today, the spotlight shines on author Cherilyn Hearn.

EA: Before Her Mother Named Her is an interesting title. Would you share with us the concept of the book?

CH: The title was originally No Remains, but after getting some feedback I felt like that carried too much of an ominous tone, for what I really feel is a silver lining, feel good type of story. Basically it tells a story set in about 2016, of a single mother and teenage daughter, living in Rhode Island. A series of events surrounding her impending graduation cast some doubt and question about her identity.
The back story involves the truth that there are victims of 9/11 who have never had any remains recovered, no DNA, no proof of death. This mother and daughter were a civilian woman working in the Pentagon and a three year old girl on the flight that ended there. She carried the girl from the rubble and amid the chaos, some amnesia and shock, they walked away and made a life. It's a great what-if story that shares the initial loss and the bittersweet shock when Rose's aunt realizes she's alive.

EA: Who would you say are your biggest influences to become a writer?

CH: Definitely teachers. I actually can't cite any writers in my family or upbringing. I can name just a few teachers who were instrumental in recognizing my talent and encouraging me to pursue it. I try to do the same when I find kids who like to write.

EA: Are there any genres in particular that you enjoy writing?

CH: I gravitate towards literary and women's fiction, but I've written a little bit of everything. I actually love the potential in non-fiction, but the market is flooded. It comes in waves. I've written children's books and poetry. It's a lot like a mood.

EA: Would you say that writing a novel is easy?

CH: I guess that's a relative term. To so many, when I mention I've written fourteen books, I get looks of shock and awe. Of course we all know that writing them is just the beginning. We all have our blessings and talents. So, when compared to building a house or running a marathon, writing a novel is easy, for me. But it takes months, it takes patience and perseverance.

EA: What can readers expect next from Cherilyn Hearn?

CH: I actually already have two crime/suspense novels in the works. This is a new genre for me, but both stories have kept me up at night and need to be written. Picasso's Son should be complete and ready for agents in November of this year and the other perhaps six months after.

EA: What is your biggest aspiration as an author?

CH: Well, I want the dream of course. Random House, a traditional publishing deal and everything that comes with it. But mostly I'd just like writing to support me, so I can just write, instead of trying to make ends meet along the way.

EA: What advice would you give to aspiring authors?

CH: It's hard. Be prepared for that. Not the writing, but all the rest.
Write every day.
Figure out what you want to get out of your writing and focus on that. It's easy to let other writers' plans infect your own.
Prepare for criticism.

EA: Finally, tell the readers why Before Her Mother Named Her is a must read.

CH: Before Her Mother Named Her isn't about 9/11, but it is a much needed, tiny little happy ending after the biggest tragedy of our modern times. Everyone can use that type of sweetness in their day.

Epilogue

Solid advice. Particularly, focusing on following your writing aspirations, and not allowing other writers' plans to influence your own. On a side note, I have my own take on the 9/11 situation, but subjects like that are reserved for my social commentary blog, Social Eyes View. I want to thank Cherilyn for speaking with me today. Check out Before Her Mother Named Her, and more from Cherilyn on Amazon.
