EA: Creatively Creative returns to kick off the month of September with author and CEO of VOMA (Voices Of My Ancestors) Publications, J. Brinkley.
EA: When did you discover that writing would be a path you would choose as a career?
JB: In 2014 or 2015, when I put my first book out.
EA: Were there any authors who inspired you to become a writer?
JB: Donald Goins, Iceberg Slim, James Patterson, and John Grisham.
EA: What is the concept of I Forgot to be Your Lover?
JB: Choices. We need to be conscious of our daily choices.
EA: Would you say that writing a novel is easy?
JB: Yes and No. You will get better as you continue to write. I say no because you have to make time to write. It takes a lot of discipline and thought.
EA: Describe the feeling of being a best-selling author.
JB: Honestly, I don't see it any different from putting out a regular book. Being a bestselling author only mean you sold a certain amount of books within a certain time frame. Either way, the accomplishment of getting a project completed is still the same to me.
EA: Was it a difficult process to launch your own publishing company?
JB: Launching my own publishing company was easy.
EA: What are the requirements for becoming an author with VOMA?
JB: Just be sincere in your craft. We accept Urban Fiction, Romance, Erotica, Crime and Suspense stories, etc.
EA: What's next for J. Brinkley?
JB: I have a new book I just completed Ghetto Tales Of Anguish. And of course I'm back at the drawing board for another book.
EA: What advice would you give to aspiring authors?
JB: Do your research before signing with a publisher and/or before you self publish. Be true to yourself. Be creative.
EA: Finally, tell the readers why I Forgot to be Your Lover is a must buy.
JB: Well, it's a realistic story. People can learn a lot from it. It's a page turner. Simply put.
Epilogue
It is important to do your research before deciding to self-publish, and/or sign with a publication company. Publication companies and self-publishing both have their advantages and disadvantages. I'll hyperlink a guide for those who are looking to publish with a company, and the warning signs to watch out for.
It is equally important to be true to yourself and (definitely) creative as an author. It can be tempting to try to follow another author's approach, but I would advise against it. There's nothing wrong with taking something from them you find applicable and adding it to your own approach, but overall, have your own style, create your own legacy.
I would like to thank J. Brinkley for speaking with me today. For more on J. Brinkley, and if you're interested in becoming an author for VOMA, visit his website at vomapublications.com.
